What families say

Three years ago, Surekha volunteered as a choreographer for my daughter to perform at our community event, and since then it has been a transformative journey. My daughter has received huge praise for her performances at various Indian events through that guidance and choreography. What truly stands out is her remarkable ability to teach abhinaya. She has an incredible gift for helping even young students connect with the emotion behind every movement, making their performances truly soulful and captivating. We are truly grateful to continue our daughter's dance journey through Kathak Kadam.

Surekha's training is thorough and encouraging. Beyond technique, she is a passionate and dedicated teacher who nurtures each student individually. She creates an environment where children not only learn to dance - they learn discipline, confidence, and a deep love for Indian classical dance, Kathak.

Frequently asked questions

What age can children begin Kathak?

Young learners may begin from approximately age four, based on readiness. We consider the child’s ability to follow simple instructions, participate in a group, and stay engaged for an age-appropriate lesson.

Are beginners welcome?

Yes. Children, teens, and adults can begin without prior Kathak experience. Lessons introduce foundations gradually and build according to each student’s understanding and progress.

What do students learn in class?

Learning may include movement technique, tatkar, chakkars, hastaks, compositions, taal, bols, padhant, abhinaya, theory, and musical understanding. Material is introduced progressively according to the student’s level.

Are classes available for adults?

Yes. Adult beginners and returning dancers are welcome. Adult instruction follows the same learning-first approach, with goals and corrections adapted to the student’s experience and pace.

Are students required to perform?

No. Students are prepared for performances gradually, and stage opportunities follow learning, attendance, confidence, discipline, and technical readiness. Students are not rushed to perform before they are prepared.

Where are the classes located?

Classes are offered in Overland Park, Kansas. Additional location details are shared with registered families as appropriate. Live online lessons are also available.

How is student progress evaluated?

Internal assessments and regular feedback help identify strengths and areas that need additional support. They are used to guide learning, not to compare or embarrass students.

Are trial classes available?

Please contact Kathak Kadam to ask about current availability, the student’s age-group suitability, and whether a trial class is appropriate.
